Encouraging beggary

I was in the marketplace when I saw a little boy who kept asking a girl to buy some flowers from him. The girl gave him money but did not take the flowers. Despite the fact that he continuously pleaded with her to take them, she did not do so and entered a shop. This act compelled me to think what we are doing. We do not give money to child beggars so that they work and do not develop begging habits but when they work, this is what we do. We only give them money and do not appreciate the work they are doing, consequently we are the ones who make them beggars unintentionally!

Take a Gold Ring with You

STOP! Are you going for make up shopping? If yes! then please take a gold ring with you especially if want to buy a lipstick. Wondered why?

Make up is reckoned as essential for women. And without lipstick makeup is incomplete. Even for those women who do’t like putting make up, they too use lipstick and believe it as a complete make up.

But what will happen if we find out that the lipstick we are using is containing something which causes cancer. Have you ever given it a thought? Your answer must be a big NO, neither should I give it a thought, until one day my sister who is a pharmacist came from her office and asked me this question.

After asking this question, she told me about a research conducted at Breast Cancer Unit of Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Lipsticks that stays longer is because of the higher content of lead which is the major cause of cancer.

But the question definitely aroused in your mind that why i mentioned to take a gold ring with you? So here is a test you must do before buying a lipstick with gold ring even if it is branded.

  1. Apply some lipstick on your hand.
  2. Rub it with a use of Gold Ring.
  3. If its color changes to Black then it contains Lead.

I myself did this test and found out that most of the branded lipsticks change color. So guys, always keep gold ring with you when go for lipstick shopping.

Have a safe Shopping!

War against Terrorism and its impact on Pakistani masses

Introduction:

Terrorism is considered by some to be a form of war but without the rules of conventional conflict. Terrorism has existed for centuries as a means of making a government or group aware of a desire that they have to change something by creating destruction and fear.  However, this terrorism had taken a new level from September 2001.

The United States asked Afghanistan to handover Osama Bin Laden (a suspect in these attacks) but Afghanistan refused to do so.  Pakistan’s geographical proximity with the Afghanistan brought it into the limelight. Unites States had chosen Pakistan for logistics, intelligence support, bases for operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan provided its all out support to the coalition forces against the Taliban regime.

After the US attack, flux compelled people of Afghanistan to get refuge in Pakistan; they have centuries old linkages with Pakistani tribal areas and here they moved freely. In this backdrop, Taliban and some Al-Qaeda remnants also found refuge in these areas. This was the starting point of dark ages for Pakistan

Impact on Pakistani Masses:

Ever since the Pakistan ventured with America into their war against terrorism, entered into a dilemma. Pakistan proved to be pivotal for the United States in war against terrorism.

“Pivotal States are those countries which have potential influence significant or harmful effects on their region”

In coming paragraphs what impact this war against terrorism laid on Pakistani masses will be discussed briefly.

The international war against terrorism has caused more agony, deaths and destruction to the people of Pakistan than any other country of this world. There have been numerous incidents of civilian casualties because of the army’s operations and increased attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), missile-equipped Predator or Drones, operated by the CIA and the U.S. military in Pakistan Northern areas, for seeking to uproot the alleged al-Qaeda elements operating there.

Operations named Rah-e-Rast in Swat and Rah-e-Nijat in South Waziristan started in May 2009 and June 2009 respectively, to clean up these areas from terrorists and militants with the widespread support of nation. At beginning, they faced many problems, “We were utterly oblivious of the presence of Taliban in certain areas where they were hiding. They were enormous in number and chose different populated areas for hide out and we had to operate in different areas at one time”, said Safdar Ali, a military person who fought against militants in operation Rah-e-Rast, “Moreover, people were also not cooperating in vacating their areas because of the fear of Taliban.”

The Aryana Institute for Regional Research and Advocacy (AIRRA) conducted a survey in which they asked  to people about collateral damage in FATA. The people said that most of the attacks hit their targets but there is some collateral damage; as the families forced to rent out the property, is living in an adjacent portion of the property rented out.  In order to prove their loyalty to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, because of the fear that they will execute them, they allowed them to use their houses and hujras for residential purposes.

Moreover, Taliban visits the houses whose head person has linked with them, and stay there as guests. The drones hit there, kills women and small children of the hosts, those who have no role in the men’s links with terrorists. Other innocent victims are local people who just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

When this war started, a point aroused in people’s mind that who will be consider as martyr as both Taliban and Pak army are Muslims? “It’s up to people to decide if Taliban are Muslims”, Mr. Ali proclaimed, “Is this Islam to kill innocent people? Is this Islam to slaughter people? Is this Islam to destroy schools? Is this Islam to blow up Masjids? Of course not! There is nowhere in Islam to kill innocent people. This is not jihad. We do not call them Muslims; they are traitors and a major threat to Pakistan. This is our duty to eliminate the parasites that are trying to eaten up our country from inside at any cost before they succeed in their mission and destroy Pakistan. Soldiers are dying for the sovereignty of the state.” Since 2004, about 2000 soldiers were get death in martyrdom in this War against terrorism.

The operations are long enough and the human cost is painful and devastating. The people of both areas are affected in every aspect. They lost their homes as Taliban captured so many houses and were destroyed.

People had to leave their houses and live in other places, which also affected them financially. According to Govt. sources, 328456 IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) were registered from Swat. “However, there were 1.3 million people displaced (in the northwest) who still need assistance”, Mr. Ali said. The latest in the wave of such incidents has been the virtual destruction of the town of Spinkai in South Waziristan by the Pakistan Army’s 14th Division, resulting in the displacement of over 200,000 people (Dawn [Karachi], May 10).

Education is affected also up to a high level as extremists destroyed so many schools and colleges. Students are still facing problems that will take time to solve. Out of 1,576 schools in Swat, the United Nations says 175 were destroyed and 226 damaged. Under army supervision, schools are being repaired but none of those razed has been rebuilt.

The major threat to the people of swat is that the tourism is highly affected as it was the only major way of income for the people of swat. All the big investors sold their properties and have shifted their businesses to other cities. Now because of security reasons foreigners and even citizens of Pakistan are afraid to visit swat. Mr. Tahir Rasheed, National Trade and Logistic Manager, Abbott Pakistan Limited said that, “It is really difficult to go there as in security checking, they takes such a time that the area in which we need 15 minutes to reach in past,  now we reach in 1 hour.”

Moreover, the Hospitals lack equipment, specialized surgical staff, and beds, updated X-ray and CT scanners, ventilators and a defibrillator. Right now, the donors’ response is also very poor.

Lt General (retd) Mohammad Jan Aurakzai, a former military commander in the tribal areas and former governor of NWFP and FATA said that, “ when the so-called war on terror began, there were about 1,500 militant Talibans, but their number has swelled and their movement is gaining strength and has, in fact, “snowballed”. The scrooge of terrorism is not only affected the lives of northern people but also touching everyone’s life. The successive suicide attacks in the multiple cities have thrown the country into the pool of despair and misery. Since 2004 to late 2009, more than 5,500 people were killed in suicide and other attacks on civilians.

Hundreds of people were detained in Pakistan after 9/11, and some of them ended up in the U.S. naval prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The problem of disappearances of people in Pakistan is among the highest numbers of such cases in Asia. The Asian Human Rights Commission has frequently brought this problem before Pakistani authorities and international communities but not any initiative has been taken yet.

There are reports of more than 4000 persons being missing from the Balochistan province, after their arrest by the plain clothed persons from the state intelligence agencies. However, the nationalist group claim that around 8000 persons are missing. On the other hand, chief minister of Balochistan has issued a list of 1100 missing persons. Political groups of Balochistan have reported that out of the 4,000 supposedly arrested, not more than 200 have been brought to trial in courts and the remainder are unaccounted for, out of the reach of their relatives or lawyers.

The government of Pakistan through its attorney general submitted a list of 1600 persons missing since 2005.

In the Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa, more than 1000 persons are missing including some officers from Pakistani army. Over 168 children and 148 women are also missing and their names are in the official lists. The case of Zarina Baloch is worth mentioning as she was used as a sex slave in the military torture cell in Karachi, Sindh province. The nationalist forces of Sindh province claim that about 100 persons have been vanished; the same position is of Punjab province where more than 200 persons are disappeared after their arrests.

NGOs have estimated that during the current civilian government around 100 persons have gone missing after their arrest; the Supreme Court itself has more than 400 cases of disappeared persons pending. Though statistics may vary, the size of the problem is beyond dispute.

Conclusion

Pakistan a country of 170 million population and seventh largest army in the world is the frontline state in the war against terrorism. It has suffered huge setbacks in this war but despite all such setbacks and troubles it has faced nuisance of terrorism and extremism with full vigor and zeal. After 9 year of war, Pakistan still is in the dilemma of terrorism and extremism.  Major hurdle in fighting such warfare is the lack of adequate resources and training to Pakistan military. To win this war we need to train our security forces with modern weapons and equipments for example long range surveillance equipment, night vision war fighting capabilities, and other latest equipments and technologies, which can be utilized in this war. At this moment due to economic crunch, Pakistan is unable to get these latest weapons and equipments to fight these people. Now this is the responsibility of the US and its allies that they should provide us all these latest weaponry equipment and technologies so we can fight these militants more effectively. US should let the Pakistan tackle militancy in its own way, Pakistan army and intelligence agencies are quite efficient in tackling such situation, but what they need is adequate financial aid and diplomatic support from other countries. Americans should trust Pakistan’s labors and they should also try to build the gap in trust deficit, it would not only disturb the relations between both countries but also it would sabotage the efforts in the war against terrorism. Currently Pakistan is engage in tribal areas. It is fighting against terrorists, extremists and foreign insurgents who are trying to destabilize Pakistan. Furthermore US unilateral strikes in Pakistani tribal areas, in which many civilians have also lost their lives has provoked more militancy and terrorism and it has also fueled the anti American sentiments in the Pakistan. In short it can be argued that US have to change its policy in dealing with Pakistan, it must respect and honor the sovereignty and independent stature of Pakistan.

Education is essential for women

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists) (Ayah:1, Surah e Alaq)

Allah has created all mankind equal and above Ayah proves that, Quran is for everyone not for a specific man or woman. Our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said that “Education is must for all Muslim Man and woman.” Keeping this in mind Mass Communication of Jinnah University for Women (JUW) organized the seminar on Education of women titled “Beyond Barriers” in which the speakers elaborated this point.

Our chairperson Prof. Ahmed Nasim Sandilvi brought forward the point that an educated woman lead to an educated nation. I really appreciate Mrs. Iqbal un Nisa for running an organization named Women Aid Trust which educates the women in prisons. “Due to lack of education they don’t know about their rights and find wrong ways to get rid of their cruel in laws. Sometimes due to lack of resources, even if they are innocent, get stuck in prisons”, Mrs. Iqbal un Nisa said this while giving the briefing about her organization, “so we educate them that when they eventually come out from the penitentiary, they have skills to lead their lives in a better way.”

“Women can do anything and better than man”, proclaimed by Prof. Shahida Kazi, the first women journalist of Pakistan. She told the students about the educational resolution of 1960s, in which for the first time women started taking admissions in different fields other than medical and teaching. Ms. Kazi also emphasized over the importance of literature by saying that it enhances their mental ability to understand things. But the disappointing thing is that today’s generation has more opportunities but they don’t avail it as they think they are meant for homes.

Prof. Rafia Taj, Chairperson of Mass Communication department, University of Karachi quoted Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H). He said that Woman is the fourth pillar of any society, which shows the importance of woman. She said that several researches had proved that a woman’s mind work more efficiently and they are highly successful in achieving good posts.

The chief guest Dr. Rehana Ali Shah said that, “A Woman has to work four times as man in order to prove her abilities.” She added that “A Woman can do a lot of things by utilizing her mental skills even she can change the mentality of man.” Dr. Shah was of the vision that 54% women population in Pakistan so they must do something for the betterment of their country, they should exploit their abilities, without compromising their social and ethical responsibilities.

The seminar presided by Professor. Dr. Riaz Ahmed Hashmi, Vice Chancellor of JUW. He said that, “We believe in the fact that an educated woman brings change in the society and builds the character of the nation.” Dr. Hashmi stated that no one can steal the knowledge you have. It will remain with you till the end of your life.”

The western countries included education in basic needs. It is equally necessary for woman to attain education as she is responsible for bringing up her child.

Beauty conquers All..?

Advertisement is the most powerful form of marketing, the most effective and widely reachable form of communication especially TV advertisements, the way they captivate the people no other form of media can do this better. Thus the utmost responsibility to communicate the right things in the right manner to the people rest upon them.

Our advertising industry has really flourished in the past some years not only with technical aspects but also with content but sadly in this materialistic and fast world of business it has lost its credibility and honesty somewhere . Nowadays it’s more like manipulating and playing with people minds other than informing or convincing them for any product or commodity.

There are some advertising themes which I don’t prefer or I don’t believe in, one of which is Fairness cream ads. I don’t appreciate the way they express, their idea of being beautiful or successful only comes out if you are white, its like the people with not so fair complexion are no where in this world they aren’t successful and they certainly don’t have any confidence. But in my opinion it’s the internal skills and individuality which matters way more then just beauty. We Asians mostly have dark or not so white complexion and by telling them that being white is the only important thing in ones life and career that’s how media is playing with our sensibilities. I am not completely against fairness creams and all if one wants to use it one should and can but I don’t like the way they advertise it.

They say media is not biased or racist but isn’t it point towards racism and superiority of color and beauty, where they preach talent matters but inside they are still playing the beauty conquers all game……….

Dance of Seasons

FOUR SEASONS

In comes the leaves of Fall
So beautiful it will enthrall
Wonderful red, yellow and brown
Mother Nature should wear a crown
Then comes the snow
And the streets are aglow
With children playing like animated dolls
Then suddenly Spring calls
April showers may come down
Just when you are walking downtown
Along the beach the tide is high
As all the children walk by
Soon it begins to get hot
Now Summer we’ve got
Sometimes you can feel the sun’s rays
Heating up through the humid haze
The circle goes round and round
Four Seasons we are bound

It’s Me I am searching for..

Our mind has the key to every lock! So rather than asking to ten other people if ask questions to ourselves, we will get answers in a more profound and gratifying way. So once in a while one should dive into one’s own self to find answers.

Keeping this in mind I often sit with myself and ask these basic questions..

1. Who am I?

I am an ordinary person with nothing special not that I know of yet.

2. Why was I sent to this world?

This is one of the questions which I am still finding an answer too. As a     Muslim I know that I have been sent to this world to perform Islamic duties but still there is something missing that I am searching for.

3. What am I doing in this world?

I am not doing anything special right now. I am just an average student of Mass Communication and trying to make my career in this particular field.

4. Why have I chosen what I am doing now?

As Mass Communication is the field where one can express one’s ideas and opinion to the world. I think that only Pakistanis are able to bring better change for our country, especially the YOUTH and I want to light up that hope in them through the platform of media.

5. What I really want to do?

Actually I have a deep affection for my country and want it to prosper. I think that our country need a big start and I want to lay the foundation of that start in which afterwards I wish many people will join me. (INSHALLAH)

6. How I find this life?

So far I found this life as a DESERT in which everyone is looking for OASIS but they are caught by ILLUSIONS. The period in which they are absorbed in their illusions are actually the period of HAPPINESS and when they found the reality of their illusions, the period of SADNESS starts. The main problem is that we all somewhere know about the reality of these illusions but we don’t accept it. The few ones who got to accept this reality are those lucky ones who find the real oasis.

I know my answers are somewhere incomplete but I have hope that with time I’ll get the answers.

Our Bright Future

PAKISTAN HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE – that’s the resolution passed by the consensus of youth of Karachi in an Inter-University debate competition organized by Jinnah University for Women at University Premises.

Debate is the ultimate mind exercise. That is why debating competitions are held as a mind enriching activity for students and it served the same purpose here.

Several thought provoking points were brought forward by students in this productive event like a very positive point was that we the youth is Pakistan’s tomorrow, so this country has a bright future because we have courage to change it. Pakistan is not only our country but it is also our life and prestige. We are nothing without it. Our past and present is dark but not our future, we believe in our abilities, just need some time.

While there were some different approaches towards the matter like Pakistan is our motherland but it took away lives of sons of several mothers. Future is made from past and present, we can’t cut it out. 35 years of our independence were taken by dictators and the rest by disabled democracy. Our nation get satisfied only by holding processions with NGOs, and think that they fulfilled their duties. Our system is that much strong that only in education we have four categories.

“Every participant, debated like a true Pakistani, and their each word takes us to the constructive side”, said by Mehfooz Yar Khan, who presided this competition and is a member of board of Governors and trusty of Anjuman e Islamia Trust.

The Chief Guest Faisal Sabzwari, Minister for Youth Affairs-govt of Sindh congratulated Jinnah debating society for organizing the event so well and also added that they want to help in making debating culture strong as he thinks that it is a very constructive work which enhances students’ expressive ability.

Pakistan is our country, its success is our success and its failures is ours too, so to make our future right we have to make our country’s future bright as we belong to eachother.
